Tapelark is a recorder for your own listening — the way a cassette deck once was. It records the sound your Mac is already playing, after you press Start, and keeps it on your Mac.

What Tapelark does

  • It records only after you start a recording, and shows a red indicator in the menu bar while it does.
  • It uses only public, documented macOS features, and asks for each permission after explaining it.
  • It keeps your recordings on your Mac. It never uploads, shares or streams them, and has no way to send them to anyone.

What Tapelark never does

  • It never decrypts, intercepts or downloads protected streams, and never gets around copy protection of any kind.
  • It never asks for, stores or uses the passwords of other services, and never reads browser data.
  • It never reads the memory of other apps or changes them.

Protected video, for example from streaming services, reaches Tapelark as a black picture. When a window's picture stays black while its sound plays, Tapelark stops that recording, keeps only what was recorded before, and tells you why. It never tries another way.

Your part

Recordings are for your own private use. Follow the terms of the services you listen to and the copyright law where you live.
