Tapelark records the sound of a music app, a browser or a video player and saves each song as its own file. Open Record (⌘1) and choose under Record from: One app, Several apps together, or the Whole system. Then click Start Recording (⌘R).

How splitting works

  • When the player announces a new song (the Music app or another supported player), Tapelark cuts there and lines the cut up with the silence before it.
  • When nothing announces the songs, as in a browser or with the whole system, it cuts at a silence. A silence counts only after a track has played for 20 seconds, so short pauses inside a song don't split it.
  • Split Now (⇧⌘S) ends the current track at any moment and starts a new one.
  • Each track is saved the moment it ends. You don't have to stop the recording first.

Names, tags and formats

With the Music app, Tapelark can also read the album artist, the track number, the year and the artwork of the song that plays. Songs without a title, for example from a browser, can be named with Shazam: turn on Settings > Recording > Identify tracks > With Shazam, and Tapelark sends a short acoustic fingerprint of each untitled track to Apple's Shazam service, never the audio itself. You can edit every tag later in the Library.

Recordings are saved as AAC, Apple Lossless or FLAC with tags and covers, or as WAV, which carries no tags. Mute while recording silences the apps on your Mac while Tapelark still records them.

What macOS asks for

Permission to record the audio of other apps, which macOS asks for the first time you test a recording. Reading track details from the Music app is optional. Tapelark explains each permission before macOS asks.

What it won't do

Tapelark never gets around copy protection. Protected video reaches it as a black picture: Tapelark then stops that recording and tells you why. Recordings are for your own listening, and Tapelark can't upload, share or stream them. More about private use.

Need the picture too?

Tapelark Pro records one window's picture with its app's sound, in HEVC or H.264, with pause and resume. Isolate Voice keeps the speaking voice and removes music and noise, for talks and podcasts. The free trial includes both.
